The French kept Viet Minh in prisons in Hanoi and Son La. When the prisoners in Hanoi would get aggressive, they'd send them to Son La where the "malarial germ would make them weak and passive". The conditions here were appalling. While there's not much left of the cells, you don't have to have much of an imagination to see what abuse these prisoners endured. Small wonder they wanted to be rid of the French! |
